When a Sore Throat is Just Beginning
You know that feeling when your throat gets scratchy, you feel something “coming on,” and you don’t want it to get worse. At this very early stage, there is a useful cupping technique:
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers many practical tools that can be used when discomfort starts to show up in daily life. Here are two simple techniques often used in clinic that may be helpful in certain situations. These are educational examples only, if you are unsure, please consult a qualified TCM practitioner.
Cup Size: A small cup, usually size 3 or 4 (25mm-35mm).Placement: The cup is placed behind the jawline, at the mastoid process, this corresponds to the acupuncture point Gallbladder 12 area.Duration: Leave the cup on the area for about 3–5 minutes.Precaution: Avoid the large blood vessels in the neck, which is why only small cups are used.

People often report relief in the throat and a faster recovery when this is done right as symptoms begin, not after the illness has taken hold. The same technique may also be supportive in cases of earache or ear infection. In some situations, drawing a few drops of blood from the area can enhance the effect—but this should only be done by a trained professional.
