HIJAMA – WET CUPPING IN THE TREATMENT OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common sexual dysfunction affecting millions of men worldwide. The condition is characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. Traditional medicine offers various treatments for ED, including wet cupping therapy, which has been shown to be effective in treating ED in cases of Excess Cold and Blood Stagnation.
Excess Cold can enter the body through external and internal exposure to cold temperatures. External exposure to cold temperatures, such as swimming in cold water, ice fishing, sitting on cold surfaces, and exposing the region located between the umbilicus and the pubic bone or the lumbar and sacral region to a direct breeze or cold air, can cause Excess Cold. Symptoms of Excess Cold include ED, painful erection, excess water retention in the abdominal region, frequent urination, lower back pain, knee pain, clear profuse urine, prostate issues, low sperm motility, and poor morphology.
Internal Exposure to cold is caused by the consumption of cold food and drinks for a prolonged period. The prolonged consumption of cold food and drinks can lead to a cold invasion, which can cause ED. In traditional medicine, wet cupping therapy is used to treat ED caused by a cold invasion.
Blood Stagnation is another cause of ED, which can be treated using wet cupping therapy. There are many causes of Blood Stagnation, including trauma to the region located between the umbilicus to the pubic bone and the lumbar to the sacral region (lower back injuries, surgeries), exposure to cold temperatures for a prolonged period of time, and inflammatory intestinal issues. Symptoms of Blood Stagnation include sharp pain in the abdominal region, lower back pain, painful ejaculation, low sperm count, and poor morphology.
Wet cupping therapy works hand in hand with Warming Herbal Formulas in cases of a cold invasion (External & Internal Excess Cold) and Moving Herbal Formulas in cases of Blood Stagnation. In some cases, an individual can have both, a Cold invasion (Excess Cold) and Blood Stasis (Blood Stagnation). Moxibustion, a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves burning dried mugwort on or near the skin, has also been shown to be effective in treating Excess Cold and Blood Stasis.
The duration and frequency of wet cupping therapy treatments vary from one individual to another. The severity of the symptoms determines the duration of the treatment. Younger individuals tend to recover faster than older individuals. Results may vary from slight improvements to complete recovery.
While wet cupping therapy is effective in treating ED caused by Excess Cold and Blood Stagnation, there are other factors that cause ED where wet cupping therapy is not a treatment option. These factors include excessive sexual activities and ejaculation, excessive physical activities, malnourishment and malabsorption, stress, and sitting for long periods.
Wet cupping therapy is an effective treatment option for ED caused by Excess Cold and Blood Stagnation. The therapy works by promoting blood flow in the body. Wet cupping therapy is often used in combination with herbal formulas and moxibustion. However, it is essential to identify the underlying cause of ED before starting any treatment.
